Becoming a wealthy affiliate marketer is probably the easiest way to make money online. Affiliate marketing is the selling of other peoples products. There are many affiliate networks and affiliate programs to choose from. These products can be physical products or downloadable software, ebooks, courses or membership sites. Affiliate marketing is big business and some of the largest corporations participate in this – like Walmart and Amazon. Amazon.com is one of the largest companies with their own affiliate program. By simply placing one of their ad blocks on your website, blog or direct linking to one of their products, you earn a commission if the person that clicks through and buys the product. Just think if they bought a big ticket item like a TV. The higher the product price, the higher the commission!
Breakdown of Affiliate Marketing
- Merchant or Retailer – has product(s) to sell
- Affiliate Network – matches merchants with affiliates
- Affiliate or publisher – drives customers to the merchant
- Customer – buys the products
Sometimes the merchant will do their own affiliate program and cut out the network as in the Amazon example previously. The affiliate networks act as the middleman between affiliates and merchants (like a distributor supplying many different stores) and matches merchants and affiliates also known as publishers. The affiliates job is to send customers to the merchants website and gets paid a commission on any sale. The percentage of the commission from the sale price can be 1% to 100% of the cost of the product – sometimes the merchant is willing to take a loss to get a customer for future upsell / upsale of a more expensive product.

How Does The Affiliate Find Customers? There are many ways to find customers. Offline, through print, radio and TV advertising. Mostly marketers use online methods (Internet).

- Organic traffic – SEO ( Search Engine Optimization )
- Ads on their websites or blogs

From all of the above listed advertising and customer acquiring methods, the customer is forwarded to the merchant product page or order page via web links. These links are coded so that the retailer or merchant knows which affiliate provided the customer and credits the affiliate or publisher with the sale with their commission payment. Commissions are paid weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and/or by a minimum threshold depending upon the merchant’s or affiliate networks rules. If you are using an affiliate network, they make the payments. When dealing directly with the retail merchant, they make the commission payments.
Clickbank.com is probably the largest affiliate network of electronic products – information products, membership sites… What is great about membership site sales is that the commissions are residual income – you receive monthly commissions as long as the customer remains a member. Commission Junction ( CJ.com ) is probably the largest physical product affiliate network. There are many, many more affiliate merchants and affiliate networks out there. Do your homework and research to find the best affiliate programs for you.
